Johnny Stewart Sold Me
Written by Thomas Poindexter on February 7, 2010 at 10:47AM | Categories Small Game Hunting
In early December my brother and I were getting out of the stand on one of the coldest days of the year, it was about 17 degrees with a strong north wind. We headed to the house to warm up until the evening hunt. We had already filled our doe tags for the year and we had no deer to work on. So we tuned in to the outdoor channel and the show was about calling for coyotes. Being we were bored out of our minds, we figured why not try some calling? The landowner had told us that his place was full of fox and asked us to shoot them if we spotted one.
We don't have any calls so we head into town and find a Johnny Stewart Electric call for like $50. We figured we would give it a try, after all if the hottest girl from our class in high school says that it is good, then it is good LOL.
We get back out to the field and park just yards from a coastal field. We go and sit up in some hay bales in the corner of the field, and turn it on. 5 minutes later I cant believe my eyes. My brother tells me look at that gray thing, at this time is about 350yrds, running across the field. Well I have not even got into a good place to shoot yet and am free handing the riffle as I watch it through the scope. It was a huge Grey Fox. It came within 100 yards and made a straight right hand turn towards the fence line as if it had spotted us. I barked and get it to stop for a mili second and squeeze off a poorly made shot, missing it by a foot.
I was sure it is gone but it was not, and it continued on the outer side of the field coming through the brush and came within yards from us and then dis appeared into the brush. I never took another shot because for one he never stopped and 2 I knew by that time I needed to tune in my scope. And yes my scope was really off by 6 down and 2 left at 100yrds. I will take blame for the rest of the foot that I missed it by though lol.
I just have to say that Johnny Stewart calls are great if the dog will still come to it even after being shot at. But again he was probably as cold as we were and wanting a meal badly. I since have called in more with it from Fox to Bobcat to the damn Hawk that will never leave me alone out there.

Sounds like a cool experience! He makes it look so easy on TV!!! :)
That's funny you should mention the Johnny Stewart call, a friend just told me this week to go buy one for myself. Good story!
How did this picture get on my story? It is not me. I am going to take a pic of the location next time I am out and put it up.
Ive only seen one gray fox in my life! Good story Tom, i might have to look into that call.
I might have to get one one of those calls myself and try it out!
