Baiersdorf is looking for a buyer for hot water

The combined heat and power plant (CHP) at the baiersdorf secondary school is up and running. It currently supplies their building, the gymnasium and the residential buildings of the rosic company with warm water. Depending on the progress of construction, the paulini building project and the existing social housing units opposite and the planned housing complex opposite the senior citizens’ home will be connected to each other. "And the elementary school, if we build it there", mayor andreas galster (CSU) added to the list given by patrick nass, the head of the municipal company SKB. The baiersdorf energy advisory board and the city council’s energy committee visited the cogeneration plant. 25 tons of pellets "swallowed" it in the month. Annualized, this amounts to 880 mwh of heat and 1350 mwh of electricity fed into the grid.
Plant finances itself
The plant is financed primarily by the sale of electricity, partly because the SKB was able to acquire the electricity rights of a plant oil truck and therefore receives 22 cents compensation per kilowatt. It also needs plant oil, because the wood gas produced only starts the six-cylinder truck engine with diesel or plant oil.
Pellets were chosen because of their guaranteed calorific value, explained nass. In the case of wood chips, there have occasionally been problems elsewhere because of this. For peak times or technical failure, a conventional gas boiler will be installed in february.
Only 40 percent warm used
At present, only 40 percent of the heat generated can be used, according to calculations by petra denk from the university of landshut, who drew up an energy utilization plan for baiersdorf. That’s why baiersdorf is still looking for warmth seekers. Nearby residential buildings are considered on the one hand, and on the other hand, commercial enterprises that require heat for their manufacturing processes. Among those interested in plots in the future "munchswiesen II" industrial area is asked what is to be heated there.
Energy comparison
After the local meeting, denk presented the energy comparison since the first survey in 2014 and 2017. At that time, each baiersdorfer accounted for 7.2 tons per year. The new combined heat and power plant reduces emissions per person by 0.1 metric tons. It is, however, "eaten up" by an increase in mobilitat. Even though 40 percent of all energy is used for mobility, this area was only included in the report in a rudimentary form. More precisely: the registration figures of motor vehicles with an average mileage were included. For trucks alone, the number has risen by 17 percent in three years.
48 percent of energy was used in the form of warmth in 2014; half of it by private households. Municipal properties accounted for two percent, industry eleven percent. That’s where we wanted to start and drew up a concrete list: what has been implemented from the targets anchored in the 2015 energy use plan??
"All in all, a lot has been done", stressed denk. Two solutions have been set up: the CHP unit at the secondary school and solar thermal energy in bergstrabe-nord in igelsdorf. Due to a lack of interest on the part of the residents, joint solutions in hagenau and in the old town have not yet been set up.
According to galster, the situation could change as a result of the federal government’s decisions to exclude the installation of fuel-oil boilers from 2026. At the beginning of january, the company wants to approach the residents around hauptstrabe again and make them concrete offers including costs. According to galster, the technical center could be located on the land in judengasse, which the city is currently acquiring. If there are enough interested parties, the pipeline network could be laid before the main road is tarred. The renewed judengasse did not have to be torn up again, since a connection from the grundstuck to the north in the direction of the cemetery was possible. The schultheib-koch building project will be self-sufficient thanks to a cogeneration plant.
Connection to the city hall?
Galster is thinking one step further: a connection to the existing network around the town hall and preliminary planning for the bahnhofstrabe. It wants to propose its redevelopment to the city council as the next project starting in 2021. In the area around werkstrabe, where gewobau plans to build apartments, there are already inquiries from residents who want to join a cogeneration plant there. Something could also happen in hagenau if the company HBP builds 70 residential units as planned. She is interested in a connection to a warm network.
Galster bets strongly on the way with warm networks and private PV systems. For this he got the approval of all committee members. At the same time, bicycle commissioner matthias gotz (SPD) urged that the other savings potentials should not be ignored. Bike instead of car should be more common. For this to succeed, the infrastructure for cyclists must be improved. The SPD has included several points on this in its motion to introduce a climate roadmap. The term as such has already been adopted; the individual points discussed.
Busy bridge
Close cooperation with the district of erlangen-hochstadt and its bicycle traffic concept is to be sought. One sticking point is the busy bridge over the canal in the direction of rottenbach, where no separate cycle path is designated. A traffic survey in september revealed that motorists like to disregard the speed limit and bicyclists use the sidewalk but dismount when pedestrians want to cross the bridge.
Bicycle boxes at the train station
The long requested bicycle boxes at the train station should be in place by september. There will be around 34.000 euro; a request – about 1000 euro per box – has been made. An e-bike charging station is to be built next to it.
