Strong women make a splash at the mtv video music awards

For the comeback from the baby break cardi B opens the mtv video music awards with black short haircut, red ball gown – and pink baby blanket in his arms. "I have a little surprise for you!"
But – surprise – in the baby blanket hides not the few weeks old daughter kulture, but an astronaut with flag in hand, the VMA trophy. The rapper is nominated for ten of them, three of which she can take home in the end.
"I’m so happy to win this award," the 25-year-old says at tuesday night’s gala at new york’s radio city music hall with the "best new artist" award in hand. "A few months ago, a lot of people told me: ‘you are playing with your career. You’re having a baby, what are you doing??’ i delivered the baby, i had the baby, and now i’m still winning prizes."
The ramp light has to get cardi B at the 35. MTV video music awards, however, shared with many other strong women. Ariana grande wins "best pop" with "no tears left to cry" and thanks her fiance pete davidson in the front row in a short black dress – "for existing". Nicki minaj wins the "best hip-hop" category with "chun-li" and delivers a sensational performance as an ancient egyptian queen in the main hall of the new world trade center train station in south manhattan. "Song of the year" becomes "rockstar" by post malone and 21 savage. Fans could vote online for their favorites.
In the two categories "artist of the year" and "video of the year" surprisingly camila cabello, who came to the show with her mother, came out on top. "I can’t believe this is for me," says cabello, looking at her trophae. For the first time, the prize is also awarded in the category "latin music" and goes to J balvin for the song "ma gente.
While last year’s "vmas" were still political and gloomy, there is not much of that this time around. Taking a side swipe at U.S. President donald trump, actor kevin hart compares the awards gala to a "typical day at the white house" – "bad language, people running to the bathroom and tweeting crazy things". Logic and ryan tedder bring immigrant families on stage for song "one day" to protest trump’s immigration policies. "We are all human beings" is written on the t-shirts of the people, in the background of the stage a border wall can be seen.
But two well-known pop divas will steal the show: jennifer lopez will receive an honorary award and thank her with an emotional speech. "I grew up with mtv, and this is really a tremendous honor for me," says the musician after singing a medley of her greatest hits. With tears in her eyes, lopez, in a gold glitter outfit, thanks her mother, her two children, whom she calls "my two little angels," and her boyfriend, former professional baseball player alex rodriguez. "You are my twin soul, my life is better with you in it."
And at the end of the gala madonna remembers the "queen of soul" aretha franklin, who died a few days earlier. "I want to thank you, aretha, for inspiring all of us."Rough cheers at radio city music hall – but later also a lot of criticism in social media. Madonna talked too much about herself and not enough about franklin, they say. The "queen of soul" deserved a more dignified memorial, she said.
